How to Choose the Right PPE for Your Industry in Newfoundland & Labrador

Choosing PPE for a Newfoundland and Labrador workplace starts with the tasks, hazards and conditions your team faces. Before ordering, ask your workplace safety lead to confirm the required protection, applicable standards and site rules.

High-visibility clothing

CSA Z96 describes three classes based on body coverage: Class 1 has the least coverage, Class 2 provides more coverage, and Class 3 provides the greatest coverage. The appropriate class depends on the hazard assessment and applicable requirements; a job title alone does not determine it.

Check the garment label and supplier documentation. Consider fit over other layers, weather protection and whether other equipment obscures the visible material. Logo placement must also respect the garment’s visibility requirements. See CCOHS guidance on high-visibility apparel.

Safety footwear

Read the footwear markings and confirm the protection required for the work. A green triangle identifies puncture-resistant soles with Grade 1 protective toe caps. A yellow triangle identifies puncture-resistant soles with Grade 2 protective toe caps. These symbols do not mean that the toe cap must be made of steel.

Gloves, coveralls and other protective equipment

Send the required product specification with your enquiry. Include any requirements for cut or chemical protection, flame resistance, arc rating, head protection or other hazards identified by your workplace. Ask for product documentation to check against those requirements before placing an order.
